Scarborough Engineering Week 2017 Press Release – August 2017

Scarborough Engineering Week 2017

The annual Scarborough Engineering Week is back for 2017 with more employers and hands on activities than ever! The three-day event is designed to show young people how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are so important in the real world. It inspires students to consider the exciting opportunities that studying and working in STEM open up to them.

This is the biggest employer-led event, taking place at The Spa between 10th to 12th October, and is open to secondary and Post 16 schools/colleges on the 10th and 11th.  The final day will play host to Primary Schools during the day.  In addition, the event will host the annual dinner on Wednesday 11th October and will be opening its doors to families on the evenings of Tuesday 10th October, 4.30 to 6:30pm.

The event is organised by Scarborough Business Ambassadors, coordinated by NYBEP Ltd, and receives support and sponsorship from York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, North Yorkshire County Council, Sirius Minerals who are the Headline Sponsor, The Spa, venue sponsor and event host, HSBC, dinner sponsor and Scarborough Borough Council.

This year, in the run up to the event we are inviting schools and families to take part in the Scarborough Engineering Week 2017 Challenge, ‘Eggs in Space’.

Who can enter?

Students and families are invited to take part in a FREE and exciting Engineering Challenge.

When will it place?

The challenge is designed to be completed in school or at home with the finale taking place on the 10th October 2017 as part of the families evening session.

What is ‘Eggs in Space’

Students/families can work in small teams to engineer, design, and construct a space capsule, using any of the prescribed resources, to protect your ‘eggstranaut’ and ensure a safe landing on re-entry in one piece!

As well as constructing a space capsule we invite you to design your own Space Mission Badge so that we can identify your capsule in the event of any ‘eggstremely’ messy situations.

Did you know?  Astronauts taking part in Space Missions all design their own unique Space Mission Badge, which is worn on their spacesuits – have a look at some of the mission badges via google and see!

Scarborough Engineering Week has something for everyone, from hands-on activities led by employers, those already committed to the event, Sirius Minerals, Komatsu, McCains, Unison, Rosti Automotive, Woodall Nicholson, Mantra, Army, RAF, Navy, RNLI, Firmac, Dale Power Solutions, Schneider Electric, LeGrand, 600UK Ltd and our education supporters who will be on hand to talk to young people and their families about the exciting learning and training opportunities available, Derwent Training, Scarborough TEC, UTC Scarborough, Coventry University Scarborough, Scarborough 6th Form, University of York and we expect many more to support the event.
